INTRODUCING

LISICZA WINERY

THE LISICZA STORY

Our family winery, Lisicza Winery, dates back to the second half of the 1800s, when my mother's family – the Mérey family – began planting vineyards on the Helesfa estate, which we still own today. We purchased our cellar and press house in 1906, which remains the center of our winery. At that time, we had vineyards in Helesfa, Kővágószőlős, and Cserkút, but after World War II, they were collectivized, and the vineyards were uprooted. In 1998, under the leadership of my father, Dr. István Lisicza, we began replanting the vineyards, renovating the old cellar, and establishing a modern winemaking facility.

The vineyard is now run by Sándor Lisicza and his brother István Lisicza, who fell in love with grape growing and winemaking on the Helesfa estate as a child. Our vineyards boast a rich variety of grapes, including classic international varieties and traditional Hungarian ones, along with the specialty of the wine region, Cirfandli. This has shaped our current assortment, which offers wine lovers both reductive and barrel-aged white wines, as well as barrique-aged Bordeaux varieties. Through extensive experimentation, we, together with our father, have set the goal of discovering the grape varieties and winemaking methods that best showcase the potential and unique characteristics of this exceptional wine region.

Lisicza Winery is an innovative winery based on special grape varieties. We offer wines with the special characteristics of the terroir, which impress the consumer from the first tasting. We work with varieties that only few winemakers pay attention to - this defines the unique flavours of Lisicza wines.

The terroir:

The village of Helesfa, home of Lisicza Borház, is at the meeting point of the Mecsek and the Zselic mountains. It is along the former Roman military road from Pécs to Kaposvár city, at the crossroads of different climates and cultures, and as a result has a rich and unique wine heritage. Grapes have been grown here for 2000 years, and the soil and climate conditions are ideal for this.

The rich variety of grape varieties includes classic world types, traditional Hungarian types and the curiosity of this wine region, the Cirfandli.
